As we emerge from Lockdown and what has been a super stressful time for everyone, we thought it was worth highlighting this amazing social enterprise that does great work within the hospitality industry.
The Burnt Chef Project’s sole intention is to eradicate mental health stigma within the hospitality industry.
In a survey of 1273 hospitality professionals, 8 out of 10 them reported having experienced at least one mental health issue during their career. That’s an astonishing statistic. Read it again. That means that if you went to a restaurant to eat and they had 10 staff there, 8 of them are struggling with some form of mental health issue… WOW.
What is of more concern though, is that 46% of those people surveyed, would not feel comfortable talking about their health concerns with their colleagues. Hiding that kind of stuff from your work colleagues means that they have no way of understanding what you might be going through.
The Burnt Chef Project’s mission is to carry out training within the industry, as well as facilitate open conversations around mental health. The project is committed to burning away the stigma and shame associated with mental health for hospitality professionals worldwide.
They also have a clothing brand, which helps fund the work they carry out. We think these guys are amazing and they’ve only been going since May 2019.
On the 1st February 2021 The Burnt Chef Project launched The Burnt Chef Support Service. This is a free text-based service available 24/7 to anyone involved in hospitality who wishes to talk about their mental health.
To use this free and confidential service just text: BURNTCHEF to 85258, anytime day or night and a volunteer will aim to respond within 5 minutes.
Go and check them out. I’m sure they would appreciate your support but equally, if you’re struggling, they can HELP YOU TOO.
