Commis Chef
What is a commis chef?
A commis chef assists a chef de partie or a section chef. As a commis chef, you will be required to prepare and cook food working in a specific section of the kitchen. Depending on the hotel or restaurant you work for you may have to rotate sections every so often, this will give you the opportunity to learn more about your trade and develop your skills in different areas.
Your main responsibilities will include preparing food for a more senior chef, dealing with deliveries and stock, and upholding the high standard of the kitchen as well as the high standard of hygiene.
What sort of hours will I work?
You will most likely be required to work split shifts of around 40 hours a week.

What skills do I need?
You will need to have a passion for food and cooking first and foremost. A kitchen is a fast-paced environment so being able to work under pressure is essential. This also mean you will have to be a fast learner and a quick thinker!
What qualifications do I need?
You may be able to join a kitchen as an apprentice or as part of a training program where you can learn on the job. However, most of our vacancies will require you to have formal training, we have listed here:
- The 14-19 Hospitality & Catering diploma
- NVQs or SVQs
- City & Guilds diplomas in professional cookery
- BTEC HND in professional cookery
- A foundation degree in culinary arts
- Any health & safety and food hygiene courses
What sort of salary can I expect?
Depending on your experience and location you can expect from £23,000 – £25,000 per annum.
