Highways Maintenance Operative
What is a Highways Maintenance Operative?
A Highways Maintenance Operative helps to build new roads and pavements, and repair or improve existing ones. Work may include repairing potholes and cracks, widening roads, digging access trenches for supplies such as gas, telephone or water, and re-surfacing roads so that they are safe for motorists and pedestrians.
Road Workers use hand tools such as picks and shovels to clear and dig out the area they are working on. Heavy jobs may need the support of Plant Operators using specialised machinery, such as diggers and rollers.
What sort of hours will I work?
You will work between 37-40 hours per week with overtime being common. Most roles will require flexible working to a rota, with some early starts, and working on evenings, weekends and bank holidays to avoid disruption to traffic.
