Dreaming of a White Christmas? Part 2: Making the Most of a Festive Shift

Dreaming of a White Christmas? Part 2: Making the Most of a Festive Shift

In our last blog, we talked about the pros and cons of working in hospitality over the Christmas period. We know it can be a wild ride, a mix of festive cheer and utter chaos. But for those of you brave souls who are taking on the challenge, here are some tips to not just survive, but actually thrive this Christmas:

1. Embrace the Festive Spirit (Without Overdoing It)

Yes, you’ll hear Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” approximately 3,000 times. And yes, you might start seeing tinsel in your sleep. But try to embrace the festive atmosphere! Get into the spirit with a fun Christmas jumper, or suggest a Secret Santa with your colleagues. A positive attitude can be contagious, and it might even rub off on those grumpy customers!

2. Communication is Key

Things get hectic during the holidays. Make sure you’re communicating clearly with your colleagues and your managers. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, and speak up if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work (even if the dream involves a mountain of dirty dishes).

3. Find Your Zen

The holidays can be stressful, even more so when you’re working in a fast-paced environment. Find little ways to de-stress throughout your shift. Take a few deep breaths when things get crazy, listen to some calming music on your break, or treat yourself to a mince pie. You deserve it!

4. Plan Your Time Off (Even if it’s Short)

You might not have the whole holiday season off, but make the most of the time you do have. Plan something fun for your days off, even if it’s just a cozy night in with a Christmas movie. Having something to look forward to can make all the difference.

5. Remember the Reason for the Season

Amidst the chaos of the Christmas rush, it’s easy to lose sight of what it’s all about. Take a moment to appreciate the good things: the festive cheer, the shared laughter with colleagues, and the satisfaction of helping people celebrate. And hey, you’re earning money while everyone else is spending it!
