The Essential Guide to Traffic Management Qualifications

Safety is the number one priority in traffic management. Because of this, the industry is governed by specific qualifications. If you’re looking to join Paramount Personnel as a TM Operative, here is a breakdown of the “tickets” you’ll hear about most.

1. TTMBC (Temporary Traffic Management Basic Course)

This is your entry point. This half-day course covers the absolute basics of health and safety, terminology, and equipment. It’s the prerequisite for almost everything else.

M1/M2

The M1/M2 qualification in temporary traffic management (TTM) under the UK’s National Highway Sector Scheme (NHSS 12D) signifies competence for operatives working on single carriageway urban/rural roads, achieved by completing the Lantra T1/T2 training and passing subsequent practical assessments for M1 (mobile/short duration) and M2 (static works, signals/signs) to gain a TM card for full operative status.

M5

The Lantra M5 course (NHSS 12D M5) trains Registered Traffic Management Operatives (RTMOs) to install, operate, and maintain multi-phase traffic signals

A/B is a bit more involved due to the nature of it being on high speed

Lantra 12A/B qualifications are nationally recognized certifications for professionals working in static Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) on motorways and high-speed dual carriageways. These qualifications, which align with National Highway Sector Schemes (NHSS), are essential for designing, installing, maintaining, and removing traffic management systems on high-speed roads.

Key 12A/B Qualifications and Roles

  • 12AB Trainee Operative: The entry-level status for those with less than 3 months of experience, allowing them to work under supervision.
  • 12AB General Operative (Registered): Achieved after completing the 12AB course, the 12 TTMBC (Basic Course), and 3 practical assessments within two years.

Why Your “Tickets” Matter

Holding these qualifications doesn’t just mean you know where to put a cone; it proves you understand Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS). It’s about keeping yourself, your colleagues, and the public alive.

Pro Tip: Keep your Lantra card up to date! Many of these qualifications require periodic refreshers to ensure you’re current with the latest safety legislation.
