Job Seekers, unlocking your potential in the South West – part 1

jobseekers part1

As late summer rolls in across Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset, a predictable anxiety settles over hospitality teams. Seasonal contracts near their end, tourists pack up, and seasonal workers start worrying about where their next paycheck will come from come October.

However, there is a major misconception in the South West hospitality sector: autumn isn’t the end of hiring—it’s the beginning of long-term career building. When summer crowds diminish, hospitality venues face a massive shift in priorities. They move from high-volume, quick-turnover service to corporate events, autumn getaways, and intense preparations for the festive season. General Managers and Head Chefs are actively searching for reliable staff to bridge this gap, but they often struggle to separate the summer “surfers” from genuine hospitality professionals.

Summer Surge (High Volume, Fast Turnover)
   └── Autumn Transition (Cross-Training & Loyalty)
        └── Festive & Year-Round Stability (Promotions & Multi-Site Roles)

How to Transition into a Permanent Role:

  • Initiate the Career Conversation Early: Do not wait until your last scheduled week to ask about contract extensions. Approach your manager by mid-to-late August. Be direct: “I’ve really enjoyed this season, and I’m looking to step into a permanent role. What opportunities do we have coming up for autumn and winter?”

  • Cross-Train Across Departments: In high season, specialization is key; in shoulder season, versatility is king. If you work front-of-house, offer to shadow the reception or cellar management teams. If you’re a Commis Chef, ask to assist with prep for winter menu development. Multi-skilled staff are the last ones to have their hours cut.

  • Demonstrate Operational Reliability: Summer rewards speed, but autumn rewards consistency. Showing up on time, maintaining flawless hygiene standards, and showing initiative on quiet midweek shifts proves you are a valuable year-round asset rather than just an extra pair of hands for peak season.

Industry Insight: Retaining staff who already know the venue’s POS system, health and safety protocols, and core menu saves employers thousands in re-hiring costs. Position yourself as the hassle-free choice for retention.
